This pathway utilizes a series of enzyme reactions that neutralize toxins and transports them to secretory organs (like the kidneys or liver), so that they can be excreted from the body. This type of detoxification is sometimes called xenobiotic metabolism, because it is the primary mechanism for ridding the body of xenobiotics (foreign chemicals); however, detoxification reactions are frequently used to prepare unneeded endobiotics (chemicals produced in the body) for excretion from the body.
The process of detoxification can be made to be more efficient and effective by choosing to follow sound nutritional practices and in certain instances, following “Detox” intervention protocols that are designed to provide a foundation for this very critical system to work properly.
